IN MY OPINION. . .

the single most useful all-around garden hand tool is the hand sickle--a fantastic weeder and trimmer.

WEEDING WITH THE HAND SICKLE--INSERT BLADE IN GROUND TO TUG AT ROOT WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY PULLING TOP OF PLANT WITH OTHER HAND. WEED TAP-ROOTS THAT WON'T PULL COMPLETELY OUT CAN BE CUT WAY BELOW THE SURFACE.
SICKLE DEADHEADS NEATLY

While the broadfork makes short work of cultivating large areas, the digger/planter
CULTIVATING WITH THE DIGGER/PLANTER
is a handy tool for up close gardening-- moving soil for planting and row formation. It is also a great weeder! You can easily remove newly emerging weeds by scraping the straight edge of the blade across the soil surface.
Another great all-around gardening tool is the needle nose garden shears. It is a light weight pruner and harvester.

Topiary shears are small, traditional one-handed shears, which originated in England in the early 1700s. They were created for the express purpose of manicuring topiary and were used for shearing sheep. These time-honored shears are still manufactured and used by topiary gardeners today. Topiary shears feature a single piece design that accomplishes the same job as modern one-handed shears. Single blades are secured to each end of the bowed handle creating cutting force without springs, screws or moving parts. The bowed design is easy to operate and requires only occasional sharpening. Topiary shears are a classic trimming tool that allows for maximum control and cutting precision.

Blades are 6.5" long. Features a safety lock and soft TPR grips for comfortable operation.

 DIBBLE

The dibble ( or 'dibber', or 'dibbler' ) is the world's oldest garden tool--a sharp stick.  A fast and efficient tool for planting small wildflower bulbs and for setting in transplants. Transplanting with a dibble is much easier on the wrist than trying to do it with a hand transplanter spade. Push your dibble into the ground and push or twist it to the depth desired.  It's easy to enlarge the original hole with a gentle rocking motion, provided the soil has been well worked. These all-wood dibbles are a pleasure to use. and pruning tools are here!

I've been gardening and landscaping for over a quarter century; and over that period of time I've tried many tools for tilling the soil, weeding and pruning in gardens and orchards and in landscapes. Listed on this page are some of my all-time favorite gardening tools. Useful and durable tools that have served me well, ranging from as low as $11.50 for my favorite weeder (hand sickle) to $190 for a broadfork for soil tilling that is designed for durability and is locally made by an Indiana master welder. Well-made tools help to make better gardeners. I hope you'll find the tool you're looking for right here.

    Richard Cartwright

    HAND SICKLE
This is my number one favorite tool!
I do a lot of weeding, by hand, and this tool is, without doubt, the best weeder I have ever used! I insert the sharp finely serrated blade (14 points per inch) into the soil to make contact with the weed's root. I can usually lift the entire weed  with its root completely out of the soil by an upward tug with the sickle while pulling the above-ground part of the weed with my other hand. If the weed has a deep taproot, I insert the blade to cut off its root far below the surface and yank the weed out. This handy tool is also great for trimming grass in tight spots where the mower won't reach. I use the hand sickle for most all my weeding chores and occasional trimming and dead-heading. The very sharp steel blade retains sharpness even with a lot of digging through soil. The yellow wooden handle makes this tool easy to find when left in the garden.  (model with blue plastic handle is featured on the right)

    DIGGER/PLANTER also called EZ-DIGGERTM
The digger/planter is a unique all-purpose garden tool of Korean origin. It digs, weeds, and thins. Use it to dig holes for planting and transplanting, open and close rows for planting and transplanting, loosen soil around plants. The curve of the pointed blade allows soil to be thrown to the side like a plow. This makes it easier to dig holes and trenches. Pulling this tool is easier for digging and loosening soil than pushing a hand spade. The edges of the blade are used to level, mound and loosen soil and cover seeds.  Use to tear up sod, remove heavily rooted weeds, turn dirt back from sidewalk edges and for defining bed edges for mulching. It will cut through landscaping fabric to insert plants, grub out weeds, and move and smooth soil and mulch. A versatile garden tool I wouldn't be without.

The Broot Garden Weeder, a simple but effective tool, is designed to be a powerful weeder that is strong enough to shear a wide range of weed/plant roots without bending or breaking, and to be suitable for a variety of different soil conditions. The Broot is much more powerful and can do many jobs that its stirrup or hula hoe competitors cannot. The 8" wide working head is made of strong sharpened steel which is bolted to a 54" ergonomicaly contoured handle of 11/2" diameter select grade white oak.

The Broot Garden Weeder cuts roots best when the blade is slightly submerged in the soil (approximately 1/4" to 1" deep). The oak handle tapers down and then comes to a bulb on the end. To best grip the tool, the user should grab the bulbed end with both hands, interlocking the fingers, palms facing up and thumbs wrapping up over the top of the handle. Pull the bulbed end of the handle close to the center of chest with both elbows pointing out to the sides. Stepping forward, lunge arms straight out, pushing the working head through the targeted weeds.

    Fast and efficient weeding tool

The Grape Hoe is the tool offering the fastest way to weed large areas--but it is also a great tool for moving loose soil. The 8" specially tempered sharpened blade is set at the perfect angle for easy weeding and cultivating. It can be used to slice or chop even the toughest weeds & grasses. The Grape Hoe is a quick, efficient weeder for large areas, garden paths, around trees and is also a great aid as soil cultivator and mover in preparing beds.

The Grape Hoe, with its sharp edge is primarily a weeder and soil mover. (For digging, use the Grub Hoes. )

Weeding with a grape hoe is done by keeping the blade parallel to the ground, chop and pull the tool towards you in short strokes with the blade just under the surface of the soil. Coarse weeds, and even small woody plants, can be cut with a forceful chop of the grape hoe blade.

The tempered forged steel head is set at the precise angle for efficient weeding and cultivating.
